🍐 Fruit Expansion: Pixies & Pears!

This week’s Fruit Expansion will feature our sweet Ojai Pixie Tangerines alongside a wonderful variety of pears!

We’re hoping to share either traditional Asian pears from our farm in Buellton or delicious French Butter Pears. Both are wonderful for snacking, slicing into fresh salads, or simply enjoying on their own.

🍊 A Little Note About Our Pixies (and Imperfect Produce!)

Our Ojai Pixies are late-season and dry-farmed, which means they might look a little rough around the edges. But don’t let their appearance fool you! They’re wonderfully sweet and delicious on the inside.

I always do my best to fill your boxes with beautiful, high-quality produce, but part of farming sustainably is understanding that not every fruit or vegetable is going to look perfect.

If we tossed aside every apple with a blemish, every oddly shaped vegetable, or every citrus fruit with a less-than-perfect peel, we’d be creating an incredible amount of unnecessary food waste. That waste comes with an environmental cost, too.

At Something Good Organics, one of my biggest priorities is keeping our food system as local as possible. I work hard to source produce from farms close to home, support our neighboring growers, and bring you produce that hasn’t traveled thousands of miles to reach your kitchen.

Sometimes that means our food looks a little different from what you’d find lined up on a grocery store shelf. But that’s part of eating seasonally, supporting local agriculture, and appreciating food for what it really is.

Sometimes the sweetest fruit isn’t the prettiest, and that’s perfectly okay! 💚

Thank you for being part of a community that values fresh, local food and the farmers who grow it. Every box you purchase helps us continue doing what we love while building a more sustainable local food system.

🚜 A Few Friendly Reminders

• Sunday at 11:59 PM: Last chance to place or make changes to your order.

• Monday by noon: We’ll send out our final “What’s in the Box” newsletter.

• Wednesday (SB) & Thursday (Valley): CSA delivery and pickup day!

• Please return your wax boxes! We reuse them each week, so please keep them & return to us (or bring a bag and fill it from your box!)

• Drive slowly on the farm! We have little ones, animals, and farm equipment moving around throughout the day.

Thank you for supporting our family farm and choosing to eat with the seasons. We appreciate each and every one of you!

With gratitude,

—Heather & Bryan Givens ✌️&💕

Thai Coconut Curry Butternut Squash Soup

__wf_reserved_inherit

Prep time: 15 mins | Cook time: 25 mins | Servings: 4 people

Ingredients

2 tablespoons coconut or vegetable oil

2 1/2 pounds (1 kilo) butternut or kabocha squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1-inch pieces (about 4 cups)

1 large yellow onion (chopped)

4 garlic cloves (chopped)

2 inch piece fresh ginger (grated)

2–3 tablespoons Thai red curry paste (see note above about vegan brands of paste)

1/2 teaspoon coarse kosher salt (more to taste)

1–2 tablespoons agave (or honey (not vegan))

1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

5 cups vegetable broth (or chicken – not vegan, obviously (1 liter))

1 cup coconut milk (save the rest of the can for drizzling (250ml))

Handful fresh mint or cilantro leaves (chopped)

Instructions

1. Heat oil in a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. When the oil is shimmering, add onions and cook until soft and translucent (about 5–7 minutes). Add squash, garlic, ginger, curry paste, and salt. Stir to combine and cook for 1 minute, until garlic is fragrant. Add broth and bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until squash is completely soft, about 20–25 minutes.

2. While soup is simmering, make Spiced Candied Peanuts (if using).

3. Blend soup well using a stick blender or, working in batches, transfer soup to a blender (do not fill blender more than halfway with hot liquid and use a kitchen towel to protect your hand from any escaping steam). Purée soup and add back to the pot. Add coconut milk and re-heat the soup until just hot, then stir in the lime juice and honey, and adjust the seasoning with salt. Ladle soup into individual bowls. Use a spoon to drizzle a bit of coconut milk over each bowl. Top with Spiced Peanuts and a sprinkle of cilantro or mint.
