CSA and Juice for Jan 22 The Eggs are Coming

Lots of great things are happening on the farm right now. Our chickens are starting to lay eggs. Check out the picture of our multi color 6 pack. The eggs are still too small to sell, but I anticipate them being ready in about 2-4 weeks. 100% organic of course!

We installed a few new green houses at Ward Dr. Check out our early zucchini, cherry and a few varieties of red tomatoes below! Planted over the weekend, these crops are expected to start producing in about 3 months if all goes as planned.

CSA and Juice for Jan 8th Axxess Discount Changes

Our little CSA has made some improvements last year. We’ve upgraded our software system and made it possible to accept credit cards and e-checks. Our software has also made it possible for us to reach out to multiple drop off spots and include a Juice Share. Those improvement are costing us enough money that we had to cancel our Axxess Discount. It is still possible to cash in one time as a new customer, but we no longer offer our $5 discount for continued members. We will continue to pack our boxes as full as possible with all the fantastic organic veggies the farm has to offer. Please let me know if you have any questions.

CSA and Juice for Jan 1st – Here’s to a plant based New Year

From our family to yours, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for supporting local food and farms. With more factory, mono cropping farms and huge corporations taking over food supplies, it’s more important than ever to support small farms. We hope your new year is filled with health, happiness and delicious, nutritious vegetables. Wishing you the very best and more for 2014.
There are tons of studies that support the theory that plant based lifestyles are the best and most sustainable way of losing weight and improving health. There is no better study than trying it out yourself and reaping the benefits of total body improvements. I recommend watching a cool documentary called Forks Over Knifes which goes into much more details.
When you get your box this new year make a conscious effort to eat every vegetable inside. Your body will thank you. Instead of saying, “I want to lose weight this year”, try adjusting that to “I want to focus on the quality of food I put in my mouth,” and the rest will follow.

Heads Up! CSA for December 18th Happy Holidays

Happiest holidays from all of here at the farm (including the chickens). Please note we are shutting everything down next week. There will be no boxes prepared on December 25th. We will also be suspending deliveries to all schools December 25th & January 1st. Because of the shorter days and colder nights things have really slowed down here on the farm and things are growing a lot slower. It will be nice to give the farm a week off to regenerate.

We are selling gift certificates in 2-12 week increments. The gift card includes a plantable card from Green Field Paper and a $5 gift certificate to our CSA store. Please contact me or check out our website for more details.

Your CSA box this week will include a small homemade gift from us girls here at the farm. It only seemed appropriate to bake some cookies!

Heads Up! CSA and JUICE FEAST for 12/11

Just a reminder our juice feast is below 🙂

For a limited time we are offering gift certificates in any amount from 2-12 week time periods. Your gift will include a plantable card from Green Field paper company and a $5 gift certificate to our CSA store. There is no better present than the gift of veggies and health.

We will be closing for the week of Christmas (12/25). It just so happens Christmas lands on Wednesday this year so we will be taking that time to spend with our families and plan for the upcoming year. We are really excited to be on the verge of offering eggs in the CSA. In the new year we plan on partnering up with a brand new mom and pop bakery called Deux offering some of the most spectacular bread I’ve ever seen. Hopefully with eggs, bread and cheese we can keep a lot of our dollars spent locally in the community while nourishing our families.

It’s been below freezing here on the farm and we are definitely feeling as winter as Santa Barbara gets – about 29 degrees. Here’s some frozen dandelion greens this morning: No more zucchini and I am betting that tomatoes are going to be hard to find in the next few months, so let’s especially enjoy them this week. I am looking forward to a few new winter crops trickling in!

Heads Up! CSA box for 11/27 Happy Thanks Givens!

Happy Thanksgiving from the Givens family. I’m really thankful for the great community we have and all the fresh, nourishing produce that we are able to keep locally here through our Community Supported Agriculture program. Your support of this program not only keeps our produce within minutes of the source, but we are also able to support other local farms in the area. We also expanded and are currently raising 52 chickens this year, which will soon be producing organic eggs. And we will definitely be giving back to the less fortunate as we approach next month through food donations. Your dollars spent with our CSA program are definitely going a long way and is dedicated to educate more people about small farms and their importance.

In honor of thanksgiving we will be loading our boxes up with extra portions on some items!! I’m sorry to say that a disease spread through our green beans and caused major shortage for Thanksgiving. We will be loaded back up for the month of December as our new crop is blooming right now.

Casitas Valley Creamery has been hard at work and has released their new line of fresh cheeses. Check out our store to place an order for next week.

Your Hachiya persimmons this week are from Vincent Farms. PLEASE NOTE: THESE MUST BE COMPLETELY RIPE AND SOFT TO CONSUME. DO NOT CONSUME BEFORE RIPE OR THEY WILL BE BITTER. The persimmons are some of the best I’ve ever had and really great to bake with, spread on toast or freeze the pulp and eat it like sorbet. To ripen a Hachiya persimmon, simply let it sit on your counter top until it’s so soft, it’s like a water balloon about to burst. You can hasten the process by putting persimmons in a well-sealed container; adding an apple, which give off a lot of ethyline gas, which will speed things up.
Vincent farms has 30+ year old trees which result in some amazing avocados, and the lamb hass has a rich creamy flavor, a step up from the regular hass. These old trees are believed to produce superior fruit and quality.

Heads UP! CSA for November 13th A fall box

Growth is starting to slow down on the farm. I see fields of sugar snap peas, broccoli and cauliflower growing, but it’s taking twice as long as in the spring. We have also released a ton of beneficial insects to help battle some of the worst bugs that totally destroy crops. We released hundreds of dollars worth of nematodes just the other day. These are single celled organisms that eat the larva left in the soil by other bugs. It’s a constant battle to try and get these crops to grow. When our first beets come up in January they will probably be a bit eaten by what’s left in the ground. It’s just the way things work around here. Not always the prettiest, but always the tastiest.

November 13th CSA contains:
BLUE LAKE GREEN BEANS
CARROTS
ROMAINE LETTUCE
RED TOMATOES
YELLOW BELL PEPPERS
ACORN SQUASH
RED CHARD
RADISHES

CELERY
